To my beautiful daughter Jayne (left) on her 23rd Birthday.
“I once had a beautiful doll, dears,
The most beautiful doll in the world
Her skin was so pink, and so white, dears,
And her hair was so beautifully curled.
But I lost my poor little doll, dears,
As I played on the heath one day,
Though I cried for her more than a week, dears
I never could find where she lay.
Then I found my poor little doll, dears
As I played on the heath one day
Folks say she is terribly changed, dears,
For her paint is all washed away.
Her arms trodden off by the cows, dears,
And her hair – not the least bit curled
But for old sake’s sake, she is still, dears,
The most beautiful doll in the world.
Jayne, I know you’ll remember this. Happy, happy birthday, and I hope to see you soon. Though you are far away physically, you are always and forever in my heart. I love you and miss you, darling girl….momma xxoo
(This poem was recited to me by my own momma when I was very young….and I would recite this to Jayne when she was a little girl)
